En 1985 il sort The night I fell in love, album charnière entre les trois premiers du début au son pas encore dominé par les synthétiseurs et ceux qui suivront aux arrangements très marqués par leur époque. «My sensitivity (gets in the way)» est à cet égard une réussite qui arrive à trouver un équilibre entre les deux –peut-être surtout grâce aux chœurs. «’Til my baby comes home» (nº4 R&B) et «It’s over now» (nº4 R&B) sont remixées pour des 12". «Wait for love» et «If only for one night» seront respectivement les troisième et quatrième simples. «If only for the night» est une composition de Brenda Russell qu’elle a chantée sur son premier album (1979) et qui avait été reprise par Roberta Flack en 1980. L’autre reprise est «Creepin’» de Stevie Wonder (1974). Le reste est un ensemble de ballades réalisé par Vandross d'où seul se détache le bon syncopé «My sensitivity (gets in the way)». L’album se vendra très bien et sera double platine, en plus de l’habituel nº1 R&B. Cet album est malheureusement le premier d’une longue série d’albums bourgeois enterrant le dynamisme R&B de Vandross qui n’apparaîtra dorénavant que ponctuellement.

By now a seasoned master of late-night amour and heartbreak, Vandross upped the creative ante somewhat with this 1985 release. A concept about the rise and fall of a relationship, The Night I Fell in Love is classic Luther, down to the homage to pop-soul's past (an aching cover of Stevie Wonder's "Creepin") and the endless promise of love's potential. Always one of the best and most understated male singers in black pop, Luther is possibly at his peak here. It's impossible to keep the emotions in check on such odes to love as "If Only for One Night" or the finger-popping "My Baby Comes Home."
